Katie and the starry night by James Mayhew (2012)

starry night011Van Gogh’s artwork is wonderfully introduced to a young audience in this beautiful picture book by James Mayhew. Katie visits an art gallery with her grandmother and as her grandmother takes a nap on a comfortable chair, Katie discovers how realistic some paintings came be.

The stars escape from one of the paintings on the wall and Katie determines to return them to their rightful place before the gallery guard discovers what has happened. Characters and features of other Van Gogh paintings come to life and after several disasters help Katie return all the paintings to their original state.

An ode to imagination, adventure and the wonder that is Van Gogh’s artwork, this is a magical picture book that can be shared with both pre-schoolers and school children.
