Smelly Louie by Catherine Rayner (2014)

It sound ridiculous but Catherine Rayner has accomplished the remarkable feat of making a dirty mud-smeared, dog-stained bathroom look beautiful. This is the sort of picture book that I wish came with a scent, so I could justifiably sniff the pages; roses and apple blossom perhaps!

Louie has suffered the indignity of a bath, resulting in the loss of his own “Special Smell.” The process of Louie regaining said smell, is both delightful and stinky all at the same time. There are flies, leftovers, sludge and pongy ponds, all of which assist Louie in returning to his perfectly pungent self.

The gorgeous illustrations and descriptively aromatic story will make for an absolute audience hit.
