Guess again! by Mac Barnett; illustrated by Adam Rex (2009)

So we’ve had a rhyming picture book that cleverly encourages the audience to guess the correct answer. What about a completely obtuse alternative that feeds you the wrong answer!

Guess again is hilariously ridiculous. On each page we have a delightful little rhyme accompanied by a mysterious picture. We’re encouraged to guess who’s being described.

“Their fleece is warm and woolly white.

And when you lie awake at night,

Count them and you’ll fall asleep.

A guess? Why, yes! A flock of…”

I won’t ruin the surprise, but let’s just say it’s not sheep!

Page after page of madness continues, no doubt to the delight of your audience. This would be great starting point for rhyme-exploration with a class.
