Hairy Maclary and Zachary Quack by Lynley Dodd (2000)

If you’re a New Zealander it is almost a certainty that you already know and love Lynley Dodd’s Hairy Maclary series. According to my most excellent boss, (hi Lynnette) Zachary Quack deserves top billing.

Lynley Dodd is a master of both rhyme and repetition, creating books that rollick and roll from beginning to end.

Zachary Quack, the endearing little duckling is trying desperately to play with Hairy Maclary who is most determinedly not interested. Every time Hairy Maclary tries to escape, Zachary Quack is not far behind.

“He dozily dreamed as he lay on his back when…

pittery pattery,

skittery scattery,

ZIP

round the corner

came Zachary Quack”

Wrap your lips around that wonderful sentence! The illustrations as always are a delight. You can’t go wrong with a little bit of Hairy Maclary and friends in your life!
