The deep dark wood by Algy Craig Hall; illustrated by Ali Pye (2014)

This probably sounds a bit odd, but when I finished The deep dark wood, the phrase “Oprah’s a-ha moment” kept rolling around in my head. It might not be the greatest comparison, let me attempt to explain.

A sweet little girl is wandering through a deep dark wood, full of fierce and beastly creatures, to meet her best friend.IMG_1107

Luckily  (sort of) she is befriended by a big bad wolf who takes her under his ummm… paw I guess and frightens away witches, trolls and giants. The big bad wolf has small-girl-eating on his mind, until he meets her best friend, a big scary monster!

So maybe it’s more of a “ha ha” moment than an “a ha” moment! Whatever it is, it’s a brilliant book. The illustrations are gorgeous, with some double-page spooky-wood images a standout. Like a modern Little Red Riding Hood, it will no doubt become a perennial favourite.
