Where giants hide by Mij Kelly; illustrated by Ross Collins (2009)

If you’ve ever felt let-down by a lack of fairies at the bottom of your garden, then today’s book is for you.

Our very cute but unhappy protagonist is bemoaning the lack of magical things in life. No giants, mermaids or magical broomsticks ever make their presence known. Everything is dull. But off-camera it’s all a bit spectacular. You spend the whole time having a pantomime experience, wanting to yell, “They’re behind you!”

This is one of those occasions where words and images play so well together to create a delightful picture book. The little girl is charmingly expressive in her disbelief. And the magical creatures who are trying heroically to get her attention, are hilarious. No doubt your question is, does she ever experience magic? My answer? You’ll need to read the book to find out!
