Winnie the Witch by Valerie Thomas; illustrated by Korky Paul (1987, 2012)

WinnieWinnie and Wilbur are such a delight. I had no idea they’d been around for 28 years! The 25th anniversary edition is particularly lovely, with endpapers created by primary school children.

Winnie and her cat, Wilbur live in a black house with black carpets, chairs, beds and even a black bathtub. The problem with this monochromatic world is that Wilbur is also black and therefore a trip-hazard. Winnie’s solution is to turn Wilbur a jazzy bright green. Neither green, nor the IMG_1354next incarnation, rainbow-coloured, work particularly well, so it’s back to the drawing board for Winnie and her magic wand.

The solution is a party for the eyes.
